Digital Dependence

Defeating Digital Dependency

In our modern world, we almost all spend at least some part of the day connected to digital media. We use our smartphones to browse social media, shop for items online, connect with family members, and manage our days. However, digital dependency is a real and present danger in our society due to the ease of access and addictive qualities of these digital sources.

Digital dependency can be defined as the overuse of the internet or electronics to the point that one’s daily life is affected. It can be divided into several different versions: phone dependency, social media dependency, and internet addiction just being a few examples.

According to studies, around a third of people say they feel either cut off (34%) or lost (29%) without the internet, if they can’t get online, and 17% say they find it stressful. Half of all adults (50%) say their life would be boring if they could not access the internet.

If you or a loved one are struggling with balancing your real-world and digital lives, Courageous Counseling and Consulting can help. We work with patients at all levels of digital dependency and help them overcome the compulsion to engage online to the point of it being detrimental to their lives.
