Brainspotting

Brainspotting Therapy

Brainspotting is a powerful, brain-based therapy that helps identify and release the sources of trauma, emotional pain, and other challenging symptoms stored deep within the brain and body. Developed in 2003 by David Grand, Ph.D., Brainspotting is built on a simple but profound principle: “Where you look affects how you feel.”

Unlike traditional talk therapy, Brainspotting works directly with the subcortical brain — the part of the brain responsible for emotional processing, trauma storage, and the body’s stress responses. By identifying specific eye positions (called “Brainspots”) that correspond to areas of stored trauma or emotional activation, a trained therapist can help the brain locate, process, and release what has been held there — often without the need to verbally recount painful experiences in detail.

At Courageous Counseling & Consulting, Brainspotting can be used as a standalone treatment or integrated alongside other therapy approaches. It pairs especially well with our Intensive Therapy (ART) and trauma therapy services for clients who want a deeper, body-based approach to healing. Brainspotting is also available via teletherapy for those who prefer to work remotely.

How Brainspotting Works

Brainspotting works by directly accessing the brain’s autonomic and limbic systems — the areas responsible for emotional memory, trauma processing, and the body’s fight-or-flight response. Because it operates at this deeper neurological level, Brainspotting can reach experiences and stored pain that traditional talk therapy may not fully address.

During a session, your therapist uses a pointer to slowly move across your visual field. As they scan, they watch for subtle reflexive signals — a slight eye twitch, a brow furrow, a swallow, a shift in body posture — that indicate a Brainspot has been found. You may not even notice these responses yourself. Once a Brainspot is located, the therapist holds that eye position while you focus on the physical or emotional experience connected to it. This focused attention activates the brain’s natural self-healing process, allowing stored trauma to be processed and released over time.

Sessions may also incorporate Biolateral Sound — gentle, alternating audio tones that stimulate both sides of the brain and enhance the therapeutic effects of Brainspotting.
